Volcano Science Project

I cannot tell you how many times we have made this volcano science project and yet, every time it is a winner!

We first did this project when we went to visit friends. I had seen it many times in books, but it looked like a lot of work, so we never did it. After seeing it done, I realized just how easy and effective it is! It is also an inexpensive afternoon of explosive fun!

We used a baking tray, and placed an old jam jar on top of an upside down cereal bowl, to give the volcano a bit of height.

Then crumple up lots of sheets of newspaper to form your volcano. We used home made green play dough (make a double batch, otherwise it is a little sparce) to make the volcanic mountainside. Overlap the pieces as shown below until you are happy with the result.

We then added pebbles and a few palm fronds and plastic dinosaurs, you can be really creative here. As an alternative to the playdough, you could mould river sand around your jar.

Then pour vinegar into the jar, until it is about halfway full, and add a little red or orange food colouring. Now let each child take turns to add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the vinegar mixture and there you have it!
