1841 - 1919

We really enjoyed our study of Renoir, I must say that we battled to stick to just five or six of his paintings as there were so many that we loved!

One of his most famous paintings, La Moulin de la Galette was a typical example of impressionism and you can see how his brushstrokes depict the sunlight coming through the trees.

Apparently he loved to draw from a very young age and his parents arranged for him to get a job at a porcelain factory where he was then chosen to paint designs on fine china. We decided to have a go at "painting china" too!

We read about his life in Pierre Auguste Renoir (Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists) , and one thing that struck me is that a number of the artists we have learnt about spent time studying works of art in galleries! There is hope for me yet! :-)

Another lovely book about his life is Smart About Art: Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Paintings That Smilerenoir, children art appreciation, children art activities, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, kids art appreciation. This series is always a hit with my children.

He loved painting outdoors, so we spent an afternoon painting en plein air which was a real highlight for my children.

One of our favourites was The Umbrellas. He decided that he wanted to change his style and move away from the typical Impressionist style. If you look at this painting, you can see that the ladies on the right hand side are done with the more typical quick brushstrokes, while the left hand side of the painting is smoother and more solid! My daughter found this fascinating.

A Girl with a Watering Can was also one we looked at that we enjoyed. We used it for doing narrations for our art notebooks too- you will be surprised how many details you miss if you don't take the time to enjoy a painting!

To wrap up our study we read For the love of Auguste which is an adorable book about Bearre-Auguste! The story is told about this little bear who loved to paint! It includes lots of our artists beautiful paintings, with the little bear featuring in each, and lots of interesting facts about his life. You can view parts of the book online here. It seems as if it is out of print, but we sourced it at our local library.

Don't forget to check out our afternoon exploring still life with this artist.
