Along the Banks of the Nile River![]() The Nile River is the world's longest river. Most of Egypt is basically desert area, yet the area on the banks of the Nile is rich and fertile. Locate it on the map, and follow it right down to its source in East Africa. Each year, the snow in the mountains in East Africa would melt and the water would cause flooding further down in Egypt. When the waters recede after the flood, a layer of rich, fertile soil was left along the banks which was suitable for farming- the gift of the Nile. The river delta is located at the northern end of the river where it empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Point out the features on the map. The Nile River was the centre of Egyptian life, probably being the very reason they settled there in the first place.
The Nile also meant that the Ancient Egyptians had accessible drinking water, could travel and trade, could eat, make clothing buildings and paper! However, the thing that fascinated my children most was the fact that the Nile crocodile lives there! ![]()
National Geographic for Kids has some wonderful clips and pictures of the Nile Crocodile and so we printed a couple and added them into our notebook with some other bits and pieces. I must say that it was one of our more spontaneous learning activities and one of the most enjoyable. We often use our croc's measurements as a a reference point for other activities we are doing. I often hear "Oh, so that's about a half a Nile Crocodile!" Back to History for Kids from The Nile River |
