Maps

I have had certain maps and posters up in our home for ages, without anyone paying too much attention, then moved it to a different location where it has been the topic of discussion on a regular basis. The world map we inherited from a good friend was a prime example!

When I pinned it up next to our little plastic yellow table where we ate breakfast and lunch we suddenly had a whole lot more discussion going on at the table. Talk about flags, countries, which flag belonged where, where the missionary from our morning story lived, where Laura Ingalls lived, where Grandad was working! I was amazed at how much my children were picking up!

Then we moved to a home with way less wall space, so I put the map one eye level for the children in a spot where I thought was pretty central but quickly realised that our meal time discussions over world events were not happening, in fact, we only really looked on the map when we really needed to for an assignment or task. So plan B arose! I bought a good few metres of plastic covering from our local craft store, popped all our maps on the table, threw the plastic over them and now we dine on top of the world- literally! Lately hot topics have been the Silk Route, where Grandad is in the world (he travels a lot!) and how far Alexander the Great travelled to conquer lands- whatever the meal, the conversation is always interesting!
