Handbook of Nature Study

The Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock is a wonderful treasure! You can donwload it for free here.

I have had this hefty book on my shelf for a good while now...one of those good intention books that you know will be a wonderful asset to teaching...when you get the time!

I finally pulled it off the shelf for more than a quick reference aid, and began to really read and digest!

Anna Botsford Comstock wrote this book in 1911, and her love for nature really shines through the way she writes. She is most famous for being one of the first to bring her students and other teachers out-of-doors to study nature.

We have been using it as an outline for our nature studies each term as it provides a wonderful structure for us to observe the "little things" around us and so I decided to share our adventures here as we class them as fun learning activities!

I opened the first chapter on birds ...and that is where we began!

"The birds clothing affords a natural beginning for bird study because the wearing of feathers is a most striking characteristic distinguishing birds from other creatures; also feathers and flying are the first things the young child notices about birds."

*Just a note to say that there are lessons that are area specific, but we have successfully just used local flora and fauna to substitute for that lesson and it has worked well for us.
