Epsom Salt Crystals*Adult supervision is required for this experiment. All you need for to make Epsom salt crystals is Epsom salts (which you can buy either at the local grocery store or chemist), an aluminium pie plate, or jar lid, a piece of black paper cut to fit into the plate or lid, some boiling water and a jug or jar to mix your solution in. Cut the piece of black paper so that it fits into the bottom of your pie plate or jar lid, and place it in the container. Dissolve about 4 to 5 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a cup of water, stirring as you add the salts. Add salts until they no longer dissolve and some start settling on the bottom of the jar. Pour the solution into your container and then leave it for 24 to 48 hours. Beautiful needle like crystals will start to form. I would recommend that you do this experiment on a sunny day- we didn't, and it took a while before we started to see results! :-)
You can add some food colouring to the solution if you would like to give some colour to your crystals. Have fun! Return to Fun Science from Epsom Salt Crystals
