CASSATT

As I was paging through a children's board book of Mary Cassatt paintings, I was amazed at the way she captured the calm and peaceful mood reflected in her art. I shared with my children that we so often allow ourselves to get busy and rushed in what we do and that if someone had to paint pictures reflecting some of our days, I am not so sure they would reflect quite the same! We have since made a guarded effort to enjoy things more, reflect more and slow down!

We really enjoyed this artist, and I have to say that a print of hers remains on my refrigerator to remind me to pace myself and not miss the beautiful things in life!

Mary Cassatt was famous for her pictures of mothers and children depicted doing everyday things, which was not highly favoured by the art critics of her time!

I used the prints from Ambleside Online as our pictures to study and let each of the children pick their favourite one.

My daughter loved The Boating Party and my son picked Children on the Shore.

I then asked them to look at the picture for a few minutes, and when they were ready, to turn it over and explain what they had seen to me.

I was surprised at the amount they picked up! I typed up what they had narrated to me and we stuck it into their Art Appreciation files along with their interpretation of their favourite picture.

We tried something new with this artist. Instead of having all the artwork displayed in one area, I decided to surprise the children and stuck the pictures for our artist study up in relevant places as they naturally depicted daily activities in the home. I got this idea from a lady on an e-loop I belong to and it has been really effective!

I stuck The Child's Bath up in the bathroom, Woman and Child Driving on the door leading to our garage and so on. I put the print that they had picked up in their rooms for them.

The children really enjoyed it, and I have caught them on occasion browsing and mulling over the pictures in their different locations!
