Butterfly Life Cycle

During a unit on insects we did a section on the butterfly life cycle. We had been on the look out for a chrysalis or eggs in the garden and neighbourhood without much success, so I was delighted to find that there are a few people in various countries that actually sell Butterfly Chrysalis Kits! We were not disappointed!

If you live in Australia, I highly recommend Butterfly Adventures , or run an internet search for your country or area.

When we received our parcel, I am not sure who was more excited, us or the children! A beautiful Monarch Butterfly chrysalis with a specially made box for it!

After we hung the chrysalis in the little box, we sprayed it lightly with water, and waited patiently.

Those tiny little dots are actually gold in colour and they look as if they have been delicately painted on!

After 2 days, the chrysalis became transparent, and we could actually see the butterfly inside, all curled up! On the third day, we were sitting having lunch, when I noticed that something was happening! We got to witness the Monarch Butterfly emerging, with its wings all wet and crumpled up, and sat in amazement for a good while watching as it hung and its wings dried.
