Borax Crystals*Adult supervision is required for this experiment.
You don't need a lot of fancy or expensive equipment to make borax crystals, but the results are really fabulous! All you need is some boiling water, pipe cleaners, a paddle pop stick (ice-cream stick or pencil), borax (which you can find easily in your laundry aisle), string and a wide mouthed glass jar.
Use the pipe cleaners to make a shape to grow your crystals on- we made snowflakes, hearts, stars and a few abstract shapes, but as long as it fits through the mouth of the jar you are using, any shape would be good.
Once you have the shape you want, attach it with string to the paddle pop stick.
Add 4 tablespoons of borax per cup of boiling water, and stir it until dissolved. Then suspend the shape in the solution and leave it for 24 hours.
Crystals will start forming within 24 hours, the longer you leave them, the bigger the crystals get. Crystals after 24 hours
Crystals after 48 hours
