Bird Identification

I realised the other day as our bird identification book lay on our coffee table that it has actually become a record of happy memories and learning adventures for our family!

My husband has a tattered, worn copy of a bird guide that he had when he was a little boy- it is literally falling apart at the seams. My mom decided to buy him a new copy for Christmas a couple of years ago - a crisp, updated clean copy complete with a birdwathcer's list. However, getting rid of the old copy was not an option!! It is jam-packed full of childhood memories (and feathers)! I think I am beginning to understand his attachment to his stained, taped together bird guide!

For a couple of years now, we have popped a smiley face sticker next to every bird that we have spotted and identified as a fun way to record the ones we have seen, and there is now a relatively large collection of happy faces in our book. They make me smile because not only have we been learning together but it is an interest that we share as a family and one that has developed naturally in my children. They are actively participating and getting excited about new comers to our garden or feathered friends that we spot when we are out and about. So our bright stickers leave a trail though our bird book of shared times and a gentle reminder that there is still plenty to learn.

Please note that we now have another avid bird watcher in our family!! :-) It's catchy!
