Writing Stories

A great way to encourage your children not only in writing stories but also in developing reading skills when they are young is to help them make their own books.

We "wrote" many books together and still have great fun revisiting the pages of their early writing adventures! My son would dictate what he wanted written on each page and I would type his delightful tales up in a simple and clear font. He would then cut out the sentences and paste them on the pages as he wanted them and then would illustrate his story.

He was then eager to "read" the stories to us all, with the gusto and expression in all the right places. My son had his grandfather in fits of laughter with his storytelling abilities.

With his second "publication" he started writing the title on the front all by himself. I must tell you that we still giggle about his spelling! For a little boy who was a very reluctant writer, this was a great way to build up his confidence and create lots of very special memories!
